⚠️ WHY THIS STORM MATTERS
- Melissa has sustained winds estimated at up to 175 mph (282 kph) as of the latest advisories, making it one of the most powerful Atlantic storms on record.
- The storm is moving very slowly over Jamaica — a dangerous combo of wind + flood + landslides.
- Rainfall totals are forecast to reach 30-40 inches (≈75-100 cm) in parts of Jamaica and southern Hispaniola, which will overwhelm drainage, trigger landslides and isolate communities.
- Storm surge along the southern coast of Jamaica could reach 9-13 feet (≈2.7-4 m) above ground, drowning homes and infrastructure.
At least seven people are already confirmed dead across the Caribbean as precursors of the storm struck.
